What do most people look for in a best friend? Loyalty? The ability to make you laugh? Eternal love? Those are probably some pretty important factors into what people look for in friends. If you aren’t interested in at least one of those qualities, you are probably sitting alone in the dark hating the rest of the world. If you do want those qualities, chances are you, like myself, should be friends with a dog.

But how can one “be friends” with a dog? They can’t speak to you. True, but they can provide you with a vast variety of qualities most humans lack…without even having to speak a word. That’s impressive if you think about it. Our furry friends know how to make us laugh without saying a word. They will always be there to dine with you…as long as you give them a few scraps from under the table. You never need someone else to cuddle with you because they will almost always kindly oblige. And let’s be honest, cuddling with a furry friend is so much cuter than with another human because it means the world to them. Humans take too much for granted, whereas dogs think anything to do with you is the greatest thing in the world. They will literally worship you.

I know what you’re thinking. I’m one of those people who are soooo obsessed with dogs that I forget to interact with actual humans regularly. Well I’m not. I have plenty of human friends. I’m actually one of the most social people I know of. It is just that if I was asked to spend a day exploring a new area or cooking a meal with a human or my dog, I would probably say my dog unless I seriously need human interaction. I can tell him anything I want and he won’t judge me…like that time I signed my mean neighbor up for porn magazines to be sent to their work because they kept complaining about various things. My dog just smiled at me like he was laughing along instead of lecturing me about how wrong that was. He just gets me.

He never complains about what it is I want to do, as long as he can do it with me. If I want to watch a Christmas movie in March, he will sit right by me all smug and cuddled up instead of pointing out that it isn’t quite time for Christmas movies. If I want to eat a cookie for breakfast, he’s actually quite pleased rather than baffled at my choices like most people would be. If I want to stay at home in a t-shirt and sweatpants with no makeup, he won’t judge me because he didn’t put on makeup that day either. I can completely be myself with him and he loves me no matter what.

My dog has taught me a variety of life lessons everyone should know, mainly how to enjoy the simple blessings of this life like: the meal that awaits you each and every evening, the ability to run and play, and the fact that you get to breathe air into your lungs. And above everything else, he’s taught me how to love with a pure, full heart.

So yes, I have plenty of human friends, but none of them compare to my furry best friend.
